edit note: remove the (remove-this) first. I added it to make the address lesss prone to be harvested by one of the automatic web crawlers that might try to harvest it. Newt

Small, automated 'search thingys' that have an IP address and belong to a master. They troll web sites and when they find info that meets whatever criteria they are set to use, they send info back to their owner.

The major search engines use quite a few of them to keep their content up to date.

Others belong to bad folks who just want to get information they can use or sell.

The whole process is so automated that it takes very little to render the info they harvest completely useless.

This forum software is sorta old and can't pick them out but when you look at the 'whose on the forum' numbers, chances are that at least one in ten of those listed as 'guests' are bots. If they do this site regularly (and they probably do) they will 'look' thru any thread with activity since their last visit.

edit note: oops, just put a pic on the AN go-fishing site with the same name as an earlier one so different picture displayed now. Was planning to post it anyway though. Shows a few of the 20 announced bots (as opposed to 'guest' that is really a bot) on Windowsbbs just now. This may also give you an idea why Google is such an efficient search engine. 18 of the 20 bots on the site just now were Google critters. Newt

From a couple minutes ago. I chopped a couple member names out so the total really was 14. But you gotta wonder how many of the 'guests' were web spiders.
