Hello,
I am an expat trapped in Canada and have a question. Has anyone on the list tried float fishing for Steelhead in North America and could you recommend a classic cane float rod? I'm looking at a 'Kennet Perfection'? I have never actually float fished for Steelhead myself, it is going to be bit of a business venture. After fooling around hand planing rods for 20 years I have developed a computer controlled cane mill with the capacity to produce a little faster than planing. Float fishing with centerpin reels is a recent development here so they know nothing about the beauty of cane and it's performance and I think it would make a nice partner to all of those superb centerpins now being produced. I got seriously into float fishing for Mullet when I lived in the UK and S. Africa and since arriving in Canada it has been mainly fly fishing and spinning. Thanks |

go to http://www.centre-pin-fishing-reels.com/ and follow the links.
A good Avon rod would seem ideal. No, I have never fished for steel-head. -------------------- PETER

Canadians have been using Floats and centrepin reels for years for Steelhead.
Don't know about Cane rods though. There was an article in 'Steeheader' (?) magazine a few years ago. DF |

Float fishing for Steelhead in the tributaries of lake Ontario must be recent because the fishery is not that old. I would guess no older than hollow glass?
I have a Ogden Smith MKIV Avon in my small collection of cane but I think it is perhaps a little on the short side judging by what I have read on some of the Steelhead sites and the 15ft rods they recommend! I have a friend that fly fishes exclusively with cane for steelhead and remarks that there is no fish too large for cane and the pictures he has taken endorses this. There are tapers out there for fly rods but nothing in the way of float rods. Thanks |
