was watching "the big Bite" today, whilst using lures for barramundi fishing they got snagged, they then produced a large flat weight which had a clip either end attached to some string, they made sure their line was tight, then clipped this weight to the line and let if fall, the idea was that when the weight hit the lure/plug it dis-lodged it from the snag, and it worked. after loosing one of my expensive plugs(£5.99) last weekend because the bailiff asked me to try the stock pond as they had a 20lb pike they were trying to remove and place in the big lake, but failed to mention it was very snaggy(i'd not fished it before)
has anyone seen these in the UK, my local shop has not heard of them, got to be worth spending a few bob on one if it saves your plugs/lures

I bought one of these several years ago.

Apparently they work well when fishing from a boat, and you have a near vertical drop down onto the lure.

But from the bank I found it almost impossible to get the retriever to slide down the line, and ended up accidentally cutting the braid just above the wire on my favourite lure - lost forever sad.gif

Haven't used it since.

There's an Anglersnet review on something similar to the one I was using at http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/reviews/lureback01.htm

AS Leon says, they don't work unless you can get directly above the lure, so they'r eonly really effective from a boat.
The most reliable way of not loosing lures, other than not using them, is to use strong braid. I use 100lb for a lot of my luring and still occasionally loose them, but more often you get to pull the plug out of the lake, so to speak!

I do alot of lure fishing from a small boat in fairly shallow waters, if |I get snagged, which I do quite often! then I motor the boat past where I was snagged and pull in opposite direction, 90% of the time it pulls them free,

An 'otter' is/was a piece of wood with a big loop attached .. loop it over the rod+line, let it drift downstream of your snag and pull it free ...

Look at any of the US mail order sites eg Cabelas or BassPro and you will find several different types. Some are only any use from a boat but others work from the bank.

Some short lengths of bath chain tied to the end of some cod-line is also pretty useful. A dog hook, or similar, fixed to the chains and then fixed around the line, which is kept tight, allows the chains to drop, or to be pulled down to the lure. When it reaches the lure have a good jiggle, when hopefully the chains will snag the hooks and then you can give the whole thing some wellie. As has been said, ideally pull in the opposite direction, if you can.
