I have been asked for advice re prices on a delightful split cane avon type rod made by Priory Rods of Bournmouth. It needs re-whipping, gorgeous colour cane, 19" cork handle, 11 feet long, about 1960ish, lined porcelene butt and tip, high bells throughout, reinforced ferrules that need re-anodising, pretty straight, red whipping, no intermediate whipping. A really nice rod to handle, any clues? Is it collectable, what sort of value? Certainly a very usable bit of kit. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks Chavender. I had already found those links but no joy. Thanks for trying, appreciated. I had hoped that Dunc Fairly might emerge, split cane is pretty much his thing.

Probably not much of a guide but I found this:-
Lot 88 A split cane 3 section coarse fishing rod by Priory Rods of Bournemouth, cased, together with a Mohawk fixed spool reel, a brass mounted wooden fishing reel and an Alcocks reel. £ 50 - 80 (on here ) -------------------- On average, people have fewer than two feet.

Thanks for your efforts folks. As a matter of interest Dunc did come on line and advised £40.00 if in excellent condition and on a good day. Also suggested that it is not an Avon rod but rather a trotting rod.

A really nice rod to handle, any clues? Is it collectable, what sort of value? Certainly a very usable bit of kit. Any info would be appreciated, thanks. Hi, I fish a number of Priory rods. I have heard that all of their rods were made to order. I have two at 10'9" and one at 12'4". All sourced from Ebay or junk shops. They don't seem to fetch much money as they aren't as famous as the Wizards and Avocets etc. Having said that the way to get silly money for a rod on Ebay these days seems to be by putting the word 'barbel' in connection with a rod! All of my Priory rods initially had high bells and two had porcelain butt and tip rings. One I have refitted with high bells but the two shorter rods I have fitted with Bells life or Full Open Bridge. All of these rods are relatively heavy rods and I use them unmercifully on Barbel in the River Teme. I would be confident using them on carp if I ever fished still water. My suggestion is use it, it will give you much more fun than the relatively low price you will get if you sell it. All the best. |
