All this talk of multipliers for lure fishing is getting me tempted.

Can anyone tell me why I should not buy one of these ?

Well, I don't know anything about the reels involved but I know that friends who have bought cheap multipliers have had quite a lot of trouble with them. One of the major problems they have encountered is that there is too much clearance between the spool and the body and so line can get in behind the spool. If it gets round the spindle a few times the only way to free it is to dismantle the reel. Personally while they are not the cheapest, I prefer Abu reels. Two of the seven I have are over 30 years old, have had constant use in the ocean, caught fish much bigger than they were intended for and they are still in perfect working order. They work out as being very cheap reels when you view them in that light!

Ian - in addition to what chevin says, that reel would make you a little crazy for lure work. They are made more for ledgering with the clicker feature and the lever you have to depress in order to cast.

For lure work, you want something more like this thumb bar that is not only easier to operate but is designed for lots of cycles.

I just had a look on eBay for baitcasting reels and truthfully did not see one I'd want for lure work. Abu reels are good value. BassPro has their housebrand that are good and not too expensive. Take a look at http://www.basspro.com in the freshwater fishing section and drill down to baitcasting reels.

I've always been a fan of ABU multipliers; they're durable and run like silk. Recently, though, I picked up a brand new Shakespeare Solara (unashamed copy of the ABU 5000) on Ebay for just under £15! I don't expect it to have the longevity of the ABU original, but on first examination it looks pretty good. For £15 I'm willing to take the chance.

When you can buy an ABU Ambassadeur 5501CL3, brand new, on E-Bay for less than £30.00 then that is what I go for. That, by any standards, is a cheap reel! It will last and last, and perform. The only other 'cheap' reel that I would consider is the Badger Sounion reel, but they aren't many pounds less. Buy a Sounion and you'll end up buying an ABU which means you will have wasted £25.00 and that makes it an expensive reel.

I bought one of those, under £25.00 with p&p, well pleased.

I think I actually bid £19.00 and the service was excellent, no worries.

With regard to Ians original post I think the box may be useful for keeping the bits in after you've used it a couple of times smile.gif
Buy cheap, buy twice, bite the bullet and get an ABU

Ian, they'll work but not well and not for long. If you do decide to buy one then buy two. In six months time they'll be noisy enough for use as as maracas smile.gif

Ian FG

Don't bother with a cheaper reel. Always go in for a reliable reel that'll last you a lifetime even if it's more exp.
Have an Abu 7000 and have caught fish 60lb+ on line too heavy for the reel, but its never let me down.
Quality Pays.
