Saw this in todays Telegraph
The Environment Agency is to use poison for the first time to kill an alien fish species, topmouth gudgeon, from Asia, which is threatening the survival of native species in Ratherheath Tarn, near Stavely,Cumbria. Just a thought but how will the poison recognise the alien fish as opposed to the native species? Judith -------------------- ![]() |

In America it's not uncommon for the DNR to poison ponds and restock them with the desired species. Maybe that's the plan here so that these pesky foreign fish can be stopped from transferring to other waters by those nasty livebaiters who move ruffe about?

Well, it don't look all that scary.
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSum...eciesname=parva Then again, our waters have their own distict ecology and as there's nothing to be gained by having them over here, they really should go. My only worry is that if they fail to remove them and they become established, the EA might decide to continue on a pointless and counterproductive culling campaign as they have with the Zander. -------------------- Species caught in 2008:
Barramundi. p-i-k-e-y sea bream. Indian sea catfish. Guitarfish. Mangrove Jack. Mahseer. Squid (Not strictly a fish but it took a lure !). Emporer Sweetlip. Black Spot Snapper. Moray eel. Spangled Emperor. Bluecheek silver grunt. Yellow striped emperor. Vanikoro sweeper. Pike. Perch. Brown trout. Chub. Atlantic salmon. |

While on the subject of alien fish, what happened with the motherless minnows that were going to take over our fisheries.
