Mini rant here - sorry!
Went out walking along the Colne yesterday to see what state the river is in and to feed a small shoal of chub. On returning from my walk I came across a youngish guy just plopping his rod into the river. I wasn't sure how to approach him, so I just enquired whether he knew it was closed season at the moment. He just looked confused/embaressed and carried on fishing. Bet he didn't even have a rod license. Makes me very angry when people don't abide by the rules - even if he didn't know about close season etc he could have stopped fishing when I told him about it, instead he carried on. Could have bloomin' pushed him in! What are you supposed to do when this situation arises? Sorry for the rant guys! |

Put it in your mobile now and phone whenever you see illegal fishing or fish in distress. Tight Lines - leon -------------------- |

I thought at first I would talk to him 'nicely' just in case he was only ignorant of the fact that it was close season, after all everyone has to start somewhere etc. but then when he didn't pack up when I told him it was close season I was gobsmacked, just didn't know what to do, couldn't actually MAKE him leave. Thanks for the number. Do they actually follow up leads if someone phones them?

I suspect that it very much depends on whether they have someone in the area, and/or don't have too much else on.
If the water is controlled by a club, then a call to the club secretary/head bailiff should produce a response. You can always say 'The last time that I reported someone for fishing here, they were fined £650!' then make a point of using your mobile as you walk off. But please beware of your personal safety! QUOTE Louise: Yes they do! Three years ago I saw a group fishing the Kennet during May. I rang the head bailiff - who phoned the EA. Both were there within 20minutes (This was a Sunday morning!). The group caused some trouble when confronted and in the end the Police were called to arrest them!Do they actually follow up leads if someone phones them? No doubt others will tell stories of EA apathy but in all my dealings with them (I've made other calls over suspected pollution and illegal abstraction) I've been nothing but impressed with their response... I don't know the Clone but if it has trout in he could have been fishing legally. You can fish rivers in the coarse fish close season if your target fish are trout as the open season for trout overlaps the closed season for coarse fish

I was there with Louise (i'm her o/h) the person was definatly not fishing for trout. he had a float rod with a waggler and a small piece of paste on. I asked him what fish he was trying to catch and he said he was after Tench!
The river in question is the Colne that runs through Colchester. -------------------- |

In that case if there are trout about ,the only offence he was committing was to fish with an unprescribed bait. Only worm or fly allowed, worm being ok if fished with a waggler as the method is the only thing legislated for not the type of rod
