Ok here's the mission, should you decide to accept it !
![]() I want to be able to access the internet whlist out and about not) catching fish. ![]() I have the latest high tech equipment (an ex "British Gas" lap-top (£50) ) & a disconnected mobile fone (Nokia Orange - model NHK-1XA) The problem to date is . . . . . . . . . . . . Is it safe?? . . . . . . . . . . . My soddin lap-top has a CD built in, but no soddin Floppy drive. (Panasonic CF-41) A mate's lent us an external floppy drive, but I dunno how it works (either on the lap-top , or a PC) and I'm too embarassed to ask. I've tried plugging it into the LPT (parallel port) but nothings happening. I've looked at the cable that connects a PC hard drive to a PC motherboard, and compared & contrasted this with the smaller HD for a lap-top & they have roughly the same no of pins. (but the lap-top HD doesn't have the seperate power lead connection) I've been down the "pound shop" and have obtained a car charger kit that fits the phone. So .... How do I find the pin layout for the phone, so I can conect to the internet via the com port (2) on a computer? How do I get the laptop's HD formatted & loaded with an O/S (the easiest way is to get the floppy drive recognised in the BIOS & the booting from a WinX, Unix floppy ) Sooo are any of you MAN enuff to take on this challenge? My head hurts already! Liam |

One step at at time here I think. Step 1 should be to get a working OS loaded. The remote stuff can come later.
Do you have any sort of working OS on there now? I think some of the linux CDs are bootable so if you set the laptop bios to look for the CD first (if it will) you are in business. Linux much preferred for light-duty hardware as it will run lots better than Win???. Failing in that, I always thought the external floppy drives needed an OS to function so it may well not work to do the initial load. Not sure as I haven't used them but can check with one of our hardware guru's here tomorrow if needed. |

Thanks Newt, I've had a tinker over the last few days and I guess the only way forward is to get someone with a newer laptop (which can boot from floppy) to partition my HD in 2.One having the CD drivers etc. Then I'll bung it in mine & run Linux from the CD. Cheers Liam |
