Did anyone go fishing today? I didn't, mainly because the wind ruined my last trip, and it seemed even worse today. How can you fish when you get sudden gusts, stong enough to blow a rod off a conventional rodrest, when the wind puts a hundred yard bow in the line, when your float is blown back to your feet or when your buzzer won't keep its cool? I spent last sunday chasing things that had escaped my tackle box along the bank. Does anyone have any answers?

Yes, the close season, dig the garden, paint the house, service the car, wash the cat.....

Pang, this may sound strange. Last year I was having the same issue while fishing for pike on a local lake.

My answer was to place the rod parallel to the bank and the line tight to my weights. I rigged something similiar to a paternoster set-up, also had success with popped up mackeral.

By placing the rod parallel and the line coming straight out of the rod tip and going directly into the water I was able to catch a few pike what seemed to be only mouthing the bait. I'm sure it helped having braided line too.

I'm sure you can do it in other ways but the takes were very obvious and a bite indicator wouldn't work in my situation. Haven't a clue about float fishing.. Yet...

Hope this helps.

Quick reply to ajp: I do respect the close season on all of my usual waters, apart from the carp pool. Yesterday, a family trip was cancelled, and my wife suggested I could go fishing if I wanted. I've had my eye on a trip to Holly Lakes, Leics. for a while, but decided to stay at home. Reply to Jeff S: double-meaning entirely intentional (from an old f**t!)

Wind, it was like the great gales of whenever they were in the last centuary! The surface of my local broad was just spray being bodily lifted off by the wind, incredible sight!

Hi Pangolin, yes I went fishing, but we had to give up about 2 pm, the wind just kept getting worse and even though we were in a very sheltered spot, it managed to ruin my brolly and make fishing virtually impossible and worse of all, the fish were not interested. Looks like a better weeknd next week, acording to the met office, colder though.
