The Handling Code produced by the Barbel Society is now in an easy to download document on our website barbelsociety.co.uk.

Please feel free to download and distribute as you see fit.

It is our intention to make sure every club that controls a stretch of river where barbel are caught will receive a copy and hopefully will incorporate our recommendations into their club rules.

Things don’t change overnight but on many well known barbel venues the controlling clubs are aware of conservation issues, our hope is that every club adopts the same awareness to protect the fish, the fishery and the angler.

Steve
I'm going to have a look and download the details but if recent events up here are anything to go by then we would have more success talking to the Pope (no pun intended) on issues like contraception and abortion than getting some of our North Eastern clubs to take on the issue of fish conservation and better handling techniques.
Some of our N/E committee members really do live in the dark ages when it comes to introducing new rules to promote safe fish handling

Steve,

Nice to see you back smile.gif

If you can knock up a quick press release, I'll add it to the rest of the site, so that as many people as possible see it.

All the best,

Elton

Hey Steve,

Saw you in last weeks Angers Mail.

Looks like your Barbel fishing has been going well.

My club HHDAS would be only too pleased to receive and advise our members of the new releast from the Barbel Society.

James

Not sure just which part of the N/E you come from Brian, but all clubs in my part of the N/E have a very responsible attitude towards barbel (with the exception of possibly two clubs on the Wear). Through discussions with local angling representatives the Northumbria EA area is one of the few to have any concerns about stocking barbel into stillwaters. They also very quickly carried out surveys/research into the possible repercussions following the closure of Calverton earlier in the year.

Just checked your profile, Brian. Cleveland, now I understand. smile.gif

If you had fished the rivers north of the Tees over the last 30 years you really would have something to complain about.

Will post the document on my club site, Steve.

I think Durham anglers is one of the best clubs in our region with regard to fish welfare and in the last ten years as a club has changed beyond recognition for the better.
If you know of clubs in our area (Cleveland) you will know of their attitude towards fish welfare and the need to bring rules up to date to reflect current best practices

We don't have many Barbs up here but the information has been saved anyway. Thanks for sharing that with us.

wotsit - if I'm understanding your post (and after a few times reading it, I'm still not sure) you seem to think the Barbel Society is trying to dictate rules that all anglers must obey.

From what I read on their site, that simply isn't the case.
quote:
We recommend to you the following code when handling barbel:
quote:
RECOMMENDATIONS:

Always make your first consideration the welfare of the fish.
Always use adequate balanced tackle.
There is no place in barbel angling for keepnets.
Only pursue barbel in rivers. Barbel anglers are against their stocking into stillwaters
All anglers are advised to join the A.C.A.
