I was sure that, in the past, Norton had detected a virus and I had quarantined it but when the email showed up in the list, that there was no attachment. I then deleted the email in each case without opening them. I am sure the klez virus was mentioned by Norton. It was before bugbear had been mentioned anyway. Perhaps klez could be also present in emails without attachments.

Now you have worried me! At the risk of publicising more of my ignorance, what would anyone recommend as an anti-virus programme, and is there a specific protection against bugbear available? I can spend my money fast enough, without any help from a little malaysian hacker!

AVG & ZA are excellent and you can't beat the price.

The Ad-aware chesters1 spoke of is for removing spyware which is somewhat different. Bad stuff but not nearly as dangerous as a virus.

These days getting on the internet or doing email without a good AV program with definition files updated daily is about as safe as injecting drugs with a needle that 8 other people have just finished using.

Until recently the folks using a mozilla browser with Linux kept crowing about how safe they were compared to us Microsoft users. Not any more. Same with NetScape. The script kiddies (baby hackers) are after them too now that there are enough to make it fun.

Teri! I did warn you about all this in an email and all the same things that I recommended you do have been repeated here.

Go to symantec.com and download the 30 day free trial of Norton AV. Use it to clear your machine up if you've got trouble or not and then decide on whether to buy a retail version or try one of those recommended in the posts on this thread.
My ISP recommends a product from http://www.avp.ru/ but I don't have any experience of it. Perhaps others on thread might!

Excalibur! There is a 'fixbugbear' tool free on the symantec site. Not sure if you have to have Norton installed for it to run. You could download the free 30 day norton trial version anyway.
