By strange coincidence I grabbed a big handfull of the "moss" that forms on rock bars whilst fishing the Severn yesterday. There was not a shripm or a fly lavae to be seen.
Worrying !

A very good reason for coarse river anglers to support the Salmon and Trout Association and the Wild Trout Trust.

Water flows downstream, so what affects invertebrate life and trout in the upper reaches will come down to the chub, dace and roach waters - knock out the base of the food chain, and the fish are in big trouble.

Do you mean that anglers should unite in order to save their sport?

Well, fat chance, I know, but I support those outfits (and ONLY those outfits) that I think are achieving at least SOMETHING.

Ken, it is worrying, and all of us are finding similar things. Individually they don't seem to be important but when you put them all together it is becoming very worrying indeed. In a note I posted on another thread I mentioned the fact that the ocean temperature here was up by 1C on what it was fifteen years ago. Doesn't seem to be much, but acres of what fifteen years ago was beautiful coloured coral are now acres of dead and depressing coral!
