Providing the bottom is not overly silty - rake swim before fishing - you can do this immediately before fishing - I've often caught tinca's immediately after raking! My top three tench baits are - black pudding (cut and fry it before you get to the bank), cockles (often fished in a cocktail with a bronze maggot) and 14mm halibut pellet (hair rigged).
