I HAVE HEARD FROM AN ANGLER THAT I HAVE SPOKE TO AT A LAKE NEAR ME, THAT THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF CORMORANTS, THE PIGMY AND THE COMMON. HE INFORMED ME THAT WHEN THE LAW WAS PASSED TO PROTECT THESE BIRDS, IT WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE USED TO PROTECT THE PIGMY, BUT WENT IT WENT THROUGH PARLIAMENT, THEY DIDNT STATE THIS, THEY JUST SAID CORMORANT, THEREFORE THE COMMON CORMORANT WAS ALSO PROTECTED. IS THIS TRUE??? THIS SEEMS TO BE THE CORMORANT WHICH WE SEE MOST OFTEN SEE AT INLAND FISHERIES, AND BECAUSE A COCK UP WAS MADE WHEN THE LAW WAS BEING PASSED, WE ARE NOW UNABLE TO SHOOT THESE BIRDS. THE RSPB COMPLAIN ABOUT PEOPLE THREATENING TO SHOOT THEM, AND WANT THEM TO CONTINUE TO BE PROTECTED. WILL THEY STILL FEEL THIS WAY WHEN THE HERONS START DYING WHEN THEY HAVE NO FOOD TO EAT???

Cock ups and shags, aren't you going off thread DG? A shag is smaller than the cormorant, but does breed in the UK. The Shag is the same family as the cormorant, 'phalacrocoracidae', but one is 'aristotelis' whilst the other is 'carbo'. The pygmy is a bird of Southern Europe. So, if there is a cock-up then it will probably concern Shags and Cormorants.

The original reason for putting cormorants on the protected list was that it was felt that shooters would mistake rare shags for comorants and inadvertantly help to wipe them out.

It was the shag population that was being protected by putting protection on cormorants.

That was before we had an exposion of inland cormorants!

The two types of cormorant that we now have in the UK are Carbo and Sinises which are often confused see http://www.paxton-pits.org.uk/cormorant/id/
