folks,

I'm after a multiplier, I'm looking at websites in the USA. The ones a fancy so far, are the Abu's and the Shimano's..

But they all appear to be right handed, and I'm a lefty...are they Ambidextrous? or do you need to buy one specifically for left hookers?

thanks in advance

Andy

I'm a leftie too Andy. Do you wind with your right hand like most lefties ? If so, then most of the US reels should suit you. Its because of the strange way that US baitcasters double handle their rods that right handers in the states favour the reels that left handers favour in the UK. If its a medium size reel you're after, cant go wrong with an ABU5500 and you'd wind that with your right hand. Something big for big lures and jerkbaits....ABU 6500?
Dont mess with the cheaper Shimanos, they dont cut the mustard against the ABUs. If you must have a Shimano then start with a Calcutta. Never let you down, classy little reel and a pleasure to use. Ebay.com is good place to pick one up for peanuts.

Generally both ABU and Shimano have settled for an identical system for determining left and right winders. '0' at the end of the model number means wind with your right hand. '1' at the end of the model number. wind with your left hand.

hang about a minute...you wind with your right hand?...erm, I wind with my left...and I am left handed - I think

The 5500 sounds about right for me Argyll, and it was the calcutta I was looking at..

Brilliant that - I'll make sure I order one with a '1' after it.

Thanks v.much

Being "cack handed" isnt as simple as it first seems to us "normal" right handed people! I have tried to teach "lefthanders" fishing, casting (both fly and pendulumn) and worst of all fly tying! You cant just reverse everything its not as simple as that many arnt realy truely "left handed" more that they seem to use different hands for different jobs!

The yank buisness of swopping hands has always done me! Ive asked many why and it seems to be just tradition! Mind you we cant talk!! a UK angler who insists on using a left hand wind reel for lure or pike fishing will quite happily user a right hand wind for both boat and beach sea fishing!

As for fly reels then it seems none of us can make our minds up!

It only make sense when you remember how they use a knife and fork

I like left hand wind for fresh water fishing, but when I tried a left had wind for sea fishing (from a boat) I hated it!!

It's hard to describe, but if you're using a bigger rod and winching heavy gear (and hopefully a huge cod) up from the depths it just seems more natural to suport the rod with your left hand above the real hand and wind with your right.

If you're lure fishing / float trolling you're always winding the line back towards you it seems more natural to hold the rod below the reel with your right hand and wind with your left.

I also find freshwater game fishermen often prefer RH wind, even with a fixed spool reel.

Strnage!
