Single hook through the nostril or through the tail root.

Wouldn`t a hook through the tail root reduce the chances of a good hook up though Andy?

Use a decent hook size to match the bait. Perch can gob some pretty ridiculous baits. I've caught 2lb Perch on 6 oz Perch with 2 size 4 trebles on it, intended for Pike.
I think a lot of folk don't realise just how big a Perch's mouth gets when it extends it's mouthparts.
Put it this way. I use Size 6 and Size 4 singles with 3 lobs stuffed on to attract good Perch and they have no problems whatsoever getting that down.

Perch normally attack lives tail first. With deads tail hooking helps avoid deep hooking. As Andy says use a bait bigger than you would think.4-5" roach are not to big for big perch.

Wouldn`t tail hooking increase the chances of dephooking if the perch attack tail first though?

I`ve got roach and bleak of a good range of sizes to try, I`m going for a potential 5 plusser so need to be fully kitted!!!!

Sorry,Severn I should have pointed that out.Even though they attack the tail first,it is felt by many that this is to try and disable the prey, they inevitabley swallow them head first.

Sounds like a lottery as to the best way of hooking the bait to me!!!! I`d prefer tail first but thats just `cos of the amount of piking I do. Don`t want to get it wrong though, there may only be one chance all day!

The comments re atacking tail first should be read for live fish.I doubt wether they try and disable deads! Ive never had a problem with tail hooked baits.Used to have a mini treble flyer as well as the main single for carp live baits but dont use them much now as I prefer bigger roach lives.Have you read Steves piece on here about perch fishing on comercial carp waters?

I did read an article of his thats on the Net but it didn`t mention the `correct` way to mount a bait.
