I assume you are using a windows 9x based computer if so the following will probably sort out your problem.

The first thing is have you got the program winzip installed on your computer if not then you can download it from
http://www.winzip.com/winzip/download.htm

Install this program and hopefully it will open the zip attachment automatically for you simply by double clicking on it.

Hopefully you won't need the rest but just in case.

If you already have winzip installed then chances are the zip file is associated with the realplayer program instead of winzip so you need to change the file association.

To do this open windows explorer or double click on the my computer icon, then in the window that opens on the tools menu find folder options click on this.

The box that appears has a tag file types click on this, this will produce a box with a list of all the file types. You need to scroll down to the .zip file extension(probably at the bottom) and click on it to highlight it.

The text below the box will tell you which program currently opens the .zip files, it will probably says realplayer you need to change this to winzip to do this click on either the edit or change button (varies depending on which version of windows you are running)

If you clicked on change another window opens listing all the programs installed and asks you to select which program you wish to use to open the zip file, scroll down and select winzip. Then ok everything.

If you clicked on edit then a box edit file type appears, inside this you will see a box labelled actions, highlight the line open with.... by clicking once on it then click on edit.

Another window appears in there will be a line application used to perform action, this will probably currently be realplayer this is the line you need to point to the winzip program, which you need to locate on your computer it is normally c:program fileswinzipwinzip32.exe.

The best thing to do is use the find file option to search for the winzip32.exe file and put in the location it gives you.

Apologies if it sounds longwinded it is straightforward though it is just me not being able to think straight after a very long days fishing after an almost full 24 hours working day with no sleep between but its all fun so who cares.

Lyn - the instructions from Paul_H will work. However, if you do already have winzip installed and the file associations are messed up, there is a slightly shorter, easier way.

1. Locate a file ending in .zip (the file and not a shortcut to it)
2. Left-Click once on the filename to highlight it.
3. Hold down the SHIFT key and right-click on the file.
4. Select "open with" from the menu that pops up
5. Select from the list you will be shown to open it with winzip and check the box to "always use this program ...."

You have now told your system that it is to use WinZip to open any zip files.

Thanks guys. I down loaded it and managed to open the file. It said that if I use it after 21 days it will cost me 29$ that must come from a US bank account. I don't have one. I will worry abour that one in 20 days time!!!

thanks again for your help.

Winzip will run for ever without paying for it. You just get a few annoying messages that don't happen if you pay/register it.
