Does anyone know where I might be able to find somewhere on the net that sells flies specifically for catching mullet?
I've found lots of articles, and places selling saltwater flies, but none that have a specific one for mullet. Thanks for any info Paul Jersey Mullet FIshin' -------------------- |

Post this in the fly forum...
I think one or two of the lads have fished for mullet on the fly...John Goddard had an interesting bread fly to be used in conjunction with floating bread crusts... I normally just use bread for them. angling ireland .info Greg's Gallery -------------------- IF YOUR DOG THINKS YOU ARE THE BEST

chippy
there has been a couple of guys having a go at mullet on the fly with very good results here on the island, the patterns seem to vary according to the ground and natural feed they are feeding on. one beach which has a lot of rotting seaweed at high water level has loads of sand fly maggots which are white in colour so the lads have been using small size 14 midge pattern hooks with white cotton or thin white wool wrapped around the shank, using two or three hooks on a leader of 6lb line about 12ft long, floating line, and a very slow figure of eight retrieve through them.. it also pays to throw large clumps of the weed plus maggots at various levels of the incoming tide to keep them active and interested as the tide floods. i have heard that also bread flake patterns made out of white plastazote is very effective along side natural bread flake, also green damsel nymph patterns have been taking fish, give them a go and see what happens, if you want any further info i will get a good mate of mine who is big into saltwater fly to mail you. cheers paul.. |

Do a search on Mullet Flies on this forum, its been discussed a while back. There are two types of fly, one for thin-lips, one for thick. Use a small Butcher or similar for one, and a fluffy white thing for t'other (not sure which way around). One will chase and catch, the other will suck it to death. If they are actively feeding on maggots from seaweed you can try a maggot or shrimp imitation. Hard work, but fun when you hook them as they are a lot larger than wild trout!

Good choice of Avatar Chippy - welcome to the club!
Like bob the bb, I have found small brown or green nymphs work well - in fact most have been caught on self-tied Pheasant Tails. But there is an element of self-fulfilling prophecy here, as when after mullet the first fly I try is the good ole Pheasant. If you know the mullet are on maggots, a Peach Doll would be a good idea - I've caught plenty of carp on them [ 04. Cheers for the info.
I was actually thinking about tying a fluffy white feather onto a white hook and then gluing a small square piece of brown foam over the whipping and make a kind of "bread crust and flake" sort of thing...?? Might work well with a few pieces of bread thrown into the swim to get the fish feeding?? Steve at Oceanflies.com, is kindly tying me a sample of the flies that he has uses for mullet, so i'm looking forward to the warmer weather!! I had some success using weighted shrimp patterns and a free swimming caddis pattern on the tidal Exe. They were rooting in among the weeds and gravel.
