I'm off to Fishers Green on the Lea tomorrow to do a bit of Barbeling.

The word on the street tells me that Halibut boilies are the order of the day, I couldn't get any but instead I got some Dynamite Marine Halibut pellets, trouble is I have never used pellets before and need some advice and confidence building from you guys for the novice pellet man.

Am I meant to fish them as they are and drill a hole for the line etc or am I meant to boil them first to soften them up?

as far as I know, drill them and place onto your hair rig and position with a boilie stop.

Dont boil them...unless you plan to have them yourself with a few chips smile.gif

Drill them by all means and attach them with a hair rig and stop but its far easier to superglue them to the hair rig...two glued together sandwiching the hair works. Not too much glue, just a little dab'll do ya. When they start to look a little tatty after the crays have had a good chew on them, just pull them off and glue on another two (or three or four for a decent mouthful)

If you decide to drill them, then do it through the short width...mine always seem to crumble if I drill through the long length.

Thanks for the advice guys, I need it as I have zero confidence in pellets or boilies.

I've caught all my Barbel on hair rigger Tutti Frutti sweetcorn, maybe I should just stick to that but when the word on the street in Halibut I reckon I should be giving them a go.

I have a mate who always uses two rods when fishing for barbel.

I don't like more than one rod when fishing for Barbel, things can happen too quickly to be able to control them both safely.

forget drilling! cut a small groove down one side and put a small dab of super glue in it!
size 14 hook is good presuming your yousing 8mm pellets
press the shank into the groove with the point out! and blow on it! then give a quick dunk in the drink to seal the glue!
ive had a pb carp of 27lb using the same method!
anything that picks up the bait is gana get spiked!
dont worry about the possible smell of the glue! it works mate

I attach a small bait band to a hair and cut a small groove around the pellet with a hacksaw blade for the band to 'sit in'. Result - then band stays on during casting plus the pellet leaks flavour better - anyhow it works for me - I'm always worried about clueing my fingers together in the dark! rolleyes.gif
