Folks,
I'm off to sunny North Norfolk for the weekend and I'd be really grateful for some advice. I'm contemplating taking my fly rod - but what sort of flies should I purchase/tie for targeting the mullet I've seen in the tidal creeks on the mudflats? Mark |

There are two schools of thought - most people I know have used small, silvery flies such as Butcher, Invicta, or any wet fly with a bit of colour and flash. The other school of thought is to imitate natural food with a shrimp, ragworm imitation (like a bloodworm fly) or hares ear. Why not fish a team and try both. I have been meaning to have a go in my local Langstone Harbour but not got round to it yet - I suspect early morning would be best, at first light before people start disturbing the place. I have also heard of mullet taking floating maggot-like flies fished near rotting weed. Depends where you are fishing - harbour, rocks or mud flats.
Hope that helps - good luck and let us know how you get on. |

There are two types of mullet you are likely to come upon.
The most likely to take a wet fly, with a flash of silver is the smaller thin lip. These usually gather in largish shoals and you can cast to the rises. The much larger (and harder fighting) thicklips are looking for microrganisms, so they will suck in anything that looks like they might contain them. 'Flocculent' material, such as cotton wool will work, so will filter tips from cigarettes I believe. When the seaweed picked up from the shore, by a rising tide, is fly blown, they will be pre-occupied feeding on maggots, so something maggot-like will work. Spotting your white dot amongst the hundreds of other white dots is the problem. Good Luck! (I'm sticking with bread-flake) Tight Lines- leon |
