The americans us large star lights when trolling large artificial squid for tuna and marlin.
A friend of mine has had good results pike fishing at night, he has adapted some plugs to take a small star light. He uses the desposable ones that have to be cracked before use as they are very bright.
In the summer there is at times a lot of phospheros in the water.I have seen bait fish and mullet at night by the green glow they make by disterbing the phospheros.
I fancie that on neap tides when the water is clear they could increase my catch rate.
Has any one out there played with star Lights

Hiya,

Never tried them for Bass, but I have tried them in the deep water for Spurdog etc with very poor results, in fact a couple of glow beads turned out to be a far better attractor.

I heard about this idea quite a few years ago when they first came on the market, tried it out several times, but didn't seem to work any better then a rig without them. Don't think they put fish off though, so like anything else, try it, you might get lucky.

The results from using lights in lures and baits are patchy to say the least. I've used them on a number of occasions on deepwater wrecks where you would think that they would make a difference.... they dont. Neither do they make a difference on pike lures. I even have pike flies tied with starlight holders, but I suspect that the lights are just as capable of spooking fish as they are of attracting fish. The only time I saw them work to our advantage was off the North Kenya Bank on an overnighter for swordfish. Big six inch lightsticks inside whole squid were the bait and thats the normal way to fish for
these night feeders. No lightsticks..no fish.

I used to use the small ones whilst spinning with redgills in Cornwall. Just insert them in to the redgill. Never caught Bass but caught Pollock and Mackies etc.

They work for pollack when attached to the line above a floatfished bait. I must try them when I go wrecking next. I think they would be good on a pirk jigged hard on the bottom where the fish will see it from above. I don't think they'd be worth using for bass unless inside a lure such as a redgill or the yo-zuri plug with a slot for a starlight. Bass feed by sight a lot, so a luminous lure on a dark night would be worth a go.
