I am a complete beginner to sea fishing and I'm slowly learning the ropes.
I have just purchased an Imax Beach 4 stroke 6 rod and a Daiwa SL30SH. I have only used Fixed spool reels up until now so I have no clue really as to how a multiplier works. From a quick look at it yesterday it appears that the handle only turns backwards. Is that correct ? Also it came with 2 small red things in a bag. What are these and do I need to put them on before I use the reel ? I was thinking of loading the reel up with 15lb line but I have never spooled a reel with line before so is their a trick to doing this ? Any help anyone can give will be truly appreciated. Many thanks Matt |

hi Matt and welcome,
You have come to the right place, If Pompey means Portsmouth , then a good bit of advice would be to do a search on this site for ' Shonzy' as he's from there as well, a good fisherman and very helpful, he would more than likely meet up with you as he also knows some good marks Hope this helps -------------------- Keep it reel!!

This post is going to arouse a lot of comment but I will do my best as it is to give you a clue.
Put your rod together and turn it so the rings are on the top. Place the reel on the rod so that the handle is on the right side, once secured it should turn clockwise revolving towards the tip of the rod. That is the basic setup and the way the rod is held whilst retrieving line. I normally thread the line down through the eyes and secure to the reel, with some or something holding the line spool under pressure. Holding the rod just above the reel with the left hand and turning with the right apply your left thumb to the line and move it to and throw so that as you wind the line moves evenly from side to side on the reel. I load my reels to within one 16th of an in from the lip of the spools. Having said all that the SL30SH to my mind is a bit of a handful for a first time user of multipliers, so I will wish you the best of luck. PPS The two small things in the bag sound like airbrakes and should be installed

Thanks Thurso
Bryan, yes I am from Portsmouth and have also heard of Shonzy from another forum. Ken - Ahh.. I thought as the picture of the SL30SH showed the handle on the left side it would be a left handed reel but I guess that's not the case then. ?! |

The 2 red things are indeed the brakes . To put them on use a flat head screw driver to open the side without the handle . Inside you will see 2 metal rods sticking out . Push the red brakes onto each rod . then screw it all back together .It is a pretty easy job however if in doubt go down to your local tackle shop and they will help you out . I always pop down to mine for some practical advice . They will normally put the line onto your reel (as long as you have brought the line from there )
Welcome aboard , these guys have got some bloody good advice . |

Hello Matt - welcome.
I agree with above and would emphasise strongly the suggestion that you seek out someone to give you a few lessons with your kit on the beach or a practice field, before setting out for actual fishing. It's not some kind of mysteriouse rocket science, but can be very frustrating for the novice on their own as "birds nests" of the line and crack offs can result without a few basic pointers on technique with multipliers. This can easily put people off them, but its worth persisting as they satisfying reels to use once mastered. Good luck ! -------------------- DON'T PANIC

QUOTE RichardB:  Hi Matt, plenty of good advice here but the shop you bought the tackle from should be able to answer all your questions and sort your brakes out. The reel usually comes with brakes fitted, the red ones are usually of a different size, smaller, so as you improve your technique you can fit smaller blocks. If you bought your tackle in Portsmouth, I believe there are only 4 tackle shops, any or all of those shops have the knowledge to sort you out if you have a problem. Hello Matt - welcome.
