Twas officially declared extinct in the UK in 1972.
BTW - did anyone catch Ray Mears in Sweden on BBC2 last night - he set night lines through the ice - and caught burbot on everyone! - Though I couldn't help wandering that they weren't much bigger than the deadbaits Ray was using! C. -------------------- "Study to be quiet." My Blog

Ray Mears is certainly genuine, I've met him very briefly. I doubt whether they'd go to all that trouble to fake the shots, when it would be just a lot easier to just say he only caught one, or deep hooked them all. It wouldn't matter anyway, as they all ended up in the frying pan.
Chris Yates did a slot on Radio 4 a while back, where he actually tried Burbot fishing in this country. I can't remember where he was though, but as usual, it was very entertaining. -------------------- Dunk Fairley

Doubtful since UK conditions are marginal for Burbot, at best.
http://www.fishbase.org/ http://www.rook.org/earl/bwca/nature/fish/lota.html And are you really sure you would want to add them to the waters that could sustain them? http://www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/fw/fishing/burbot.html </font> <font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Also known as freshwater cod or ling, burbot are found in lakes and streams throughout most of Alberta (Canada). They prefer cooler water and are found near lake bottoms. Burbot spawn under the ice in the winter and early spring, and are extremely productive. Large females lay up to one million eggs. Predominantly predators, they eat small fish, aquatic insects and even small rodents. </font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"> -------------------- "Democracy dies when the people wanting their government to take care of them outnumber those wanting to take care of themselves." - Author Unknown - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For a selection of lures, reels and other items, visit my eBay shop http://stores.ebay.com/JaNewt-eMart |
