Who out there uses braid? just got meself a abu 6500 for xmas and loaded it up with 18lb braid. Will be looking to use a tapered mono leader and just wondered what the best knots were to use for tying leaders to braid.
Used standard knot as i would for mono to mono and after a dozen casts had a crack off,any ideas welcome.
Also does anyone think braid better than mono?

 I rarely use mono now, it's like fishing with a rubber band. There are still some uses for mono, mainly from the shore but braid has to be the best bet. I use a double grinner with the braid doubled up for the knot, don't have a problem with the knots. biggrin.gif

Hiya,

Only use braid now, but then Mono in 400' of water is no fun smile.gif

Knot wise double uni knot works every time for me smile.gif

Braid on the boat (multipliers)and for fishing snaggy rock marks (rotten bottom and carefully designed sacrificial traces, fixed spool reel). Mono for distance casting. I am undecided about using braid for spinning off the shore but have seen it used on the boat spinning/jigging to good effect. I would not go back to using mono in boat fishing as the sensitivity that braid imparts to your fishing rig is superb. Rockling.

I have used braid on my bass rod for two years now, wouldn't go back to mono. Braid being much thinner, but stronger, it's best to go for much stronger line than usual. A 60lb braid will only be as thick as 20lb mono, so no leader is required. I spin with 38lb braid, and it's brilliant, no line twist at all, and very durable. I might try it for beachcasting, at about 70lb.

Low breaking strains of braid are notoriously unreliable. I would go with 30lbBS as a minimum, it's still thinner than 15lb mono.
With regard to the crackoff, where did the break occur, at the leader knot? As braid doesn't stretch there's not much you can do if the reel birdsnests mid-cast, the leaderknot will simply explode. With mono the stretch in the mainline absorbs the shock thus cushioning the leaderknot.
I have found that I lose a lot more fish when they shake their head and snap the trace whilst boatfishing with braid, this is because there is nowhere near as much stretch in the mainline.
