There are incidents like this every year. I doubt yak fisherman were involved in this one. Sounds like they were in sit-in-sides and canoes. Early last year a similar incident happened in Poole Harbour when a local activity center took a group of yakkers out in conditions a bit too choppy. Their kayaks got flooded but they were eventually plucked out of the water.

Sounds like sit ins.

Regarding safety, contrary to popular belief I am very safety concious. (Think they call it managed risk these days)
Took the VHF to Warbarrow. One of the unexpected benefits was picking up the coastguard local weather warnings. ONe allowed us to move closer inshore when they predicted local gusts to force 6. The dive boats were obviously listening because they soon headed home as well. Sure enough the weather for about 30 mins turned a bit lumpy, but by this stage we were on the beach having a coffee. We then relaunched once it had passed.

There will always be accidents however well prepared people are. During my time on mountain rescue in the lakes we never begrudged lending a helping hand to those who were properly equiped and experienced for the terrain they were exploring. Guess its the same with the other emergency services. Practice your drills , have the right equipment for the conditions is all that can be expected.

That's exactly it Martin, prepare for the worst, use commons sense and keep your wits about you, and don't forget to slip a few quid in the RNLI charity box when you see one, you never know when you might need them.

I am hopefull but very doubtfull that this will be the last such story we here this year.

I have been boat fishing for 20 years and it's the same old stories in the headlines of people going to sea unprepared.

Add up the cost of some simple safety gear and it amounts to no more than a couple hundred quid. It baffles me that people take such risks.
