I was packing up my rods and the end of my trip today when the boat started to swing round with the tide change. The last rod was still over the side, and the hook must have snagged on the bottom. My hands were full of bits of stuff and as the rod (in its holder) bent over I though "that hook link will break first". Wrong. The flipping rod holder stem snapped and catapulted the whole lot at least 20 feet into the sea rolleyes.gif . By-by rod, by-by reel. If only I had set the drag...as I has every other time I had put it in the holder. At least it was only an ancient Mitchell reel and a second hand rod repaired several times. New load of braid though

Ouch. That's gotta hurt.

OTOH, think how you would have felt if a fish had done the deed.

Yup.. almost been there done that... now *all* the rod rests have a 6mm bolt through the centre hole to strengthen them. Also all rods in holders have a heavy lanyard attached smile.gif

But but but there is a silver lining, a great excuse to buy a new rod and reel, the other half can't argue with that.

It certainly would have done if I was anywhere near it when that rod holder stem snapped. It fired off like a rocket, powered by 7 foot of fibreglass bent double
