Thanks for alerting me to this...brilliant reels, I have just come by a 300, good condition but bail arm a bit tatty, anyone know where I can get a replacement? 300 reels look good and preform well, why do todays manufacturers turn out reels that would look better on a Chrismas tree rather than a fishing rod?

I agree entirely about the looks Rabbit but Mitchell 300s aren't exactly peerless in the performance stakes! Their bail arms, line rollers and clutches are now a long way behind a good Okuma or ABU reel.

rabbit,
New bail wires (as the Americans call them) for the Mitchell 300 frequently appear on the US ebay site, as do other parts. Can't see any at the moment though. A replacement bail spring is also worth having. There are two types of bail arm for the 300, one for the older bommerang ant-reverse lever model and one for the other, newer model (the 300A is different again). An alternative to replacement is to rub off all the old chrome with some wet and dry and polish up the brass underneath, but you need to keep it polished. If you really want to spend money you could always get it re-chromed. Peter, what you say is true but there are a lot of people still using the old 300's and getting a lot of pleasure from them. |

Wow nice reel!
I have a mitchell 300 in the garage. But mine is a custom model. its got rock hard ground bait cleverly molded into the handle, a unique combination of worm juice and bream slime liberally applied to the anti reverse lever, saltwater corrosion to the front drum from rock fishing for mackerel, plus for added decoration it has a custom mackerel camoflage pattern to allow you to sneek up close on the little critters and not be seen. The roller and bail arm release are probably seized solid and the line rotten. It comes in a handbuilt Tesco's carrier bag for easy transportation.. Will you split and just sell the carrier bag on its own

I saw one of those in a tackle shop in York, many years ago. As best I can remember, it was exactly the same, and was going for £18. Intended for long service momento's I believe.
Good luck to 'em I say.
