tommorrow i'll be fishing a river that contains Tench and Perch but ive never fished there before. I know how to catch these fish, but should i use different techniques as they're river fish? usually id fish on the bottom with red maggots or worms for these fish but thats in a lake.

ME tench do not usually like rivers, if they do they are found in slack water and take bread or corn fished hard on the bottom. If you want big perch you need to fish lob worm or minnow on the float...years of experience is what you need I'm afraid.

Try to find the slack water for tench as Gobio suggests. Also just as on lakes they like the cover of weed or rushes. if you find a slack weedy corner where bits of rubbish have been washed into that is the place to try.

You could always try a small lure for a Perch, whilst having another rod out for the Tench. If the river isn't too fast flowing you might spot the tell-tale bubbles from the tench. If so fish there! They quite often like to patrol the margins, and like Peter says, they like weedy areas too.
