Recently my old green fishing wagon Classic failed its MOT miserabley. So much welding was needed that it just wasnt worth doing.Had to replace it so got a P38 instead. Now having a dog I needed to fit a dog guard.Managed to get one at a good price from a 4x4 specialist.
Went to fit it and found I didnt have/understand the tool required.Ive tried the manufacturers (Travall) and they cant help and tried Range Rover and they wont help! Getting desperate now as Im not able to leave my dog at home else he goes mad and cant put him in car as he will clamber over the seats and trash them. Its become a major headache. I have posted below a scan of the fitting instructions with the mystery tool shown highlighted.Anyone help me by telling me what its called (I presume that its to crush the threaded grommets that the mountings screw into in place in the roof frame) and where I can get one from.

Couldn't you make such a tool from an appropriately sized Allen bolt, with two nuts threaded on it and locked together?

Its the shaped piece on the end that might be the problem Dave. However all is not lost as I got an email this morning from Barrets (our local Land Rover/Range Rover/Jaguar dealer) to tell me that even though they cant supply one the tool is known as a "rivnut" tool and may be available from a local tool specialist.I will try them but if no good at least I know what its called now!

looks like a similar design to a pop rivet but threaded a self deforming thread dooda ,this is worth a try a handfull of buggered threads will still be cheaper than a tool This post has been edited by chesters1: Sep 4 2008, 04:25 PM -------------------- |

Just put "rivnut tool" into a search on Google and got loads of stuff! mainly all from Range Rover owners trying to fit dog guards! Trouble is that so far all the tools Ive found are fancy affairs with fancy prices!

Thanks Chesters that was the first alternative one I found to.Ive not got anything to drill out the screw threads from the "spacer" nut though.Wonder if just using an oversized nut would do? Im sure the answer will be simple just that Ive got myself into a bit of a state over this and cant see the wood for the trees!

what you don't own a drill
even my daughter has a drill and she's a girly got a piller drill here if you want to pop down ,probably a slightly larger nut with a washer beneath maybe better as the face of the nut and dooda should be flat ,nuts have a slight indent just before the thread starts ,the indent may interfere with the shaping of the dooda.the washer will have to be just big enough for the bolt to go through or the gap between them may also interfere and thick enough not to bend This post has been edited by chesters1: Sep 4 2008, 04:39 PM -------------------- |
