If you've seen this months BFM what do you think about the guy who bagged that big porgie??? He's obiousley a very experienced angler for sure, but I cant say I'd be to keen handling a 550lb shark over the gunnel of a 14ft dingy. Fair play to the bloke, great catch and only 3 miles out too.

On a seperate note, has anyone got a diagram for a correct ballon float rig, fancy trying for a Thresher south of the Isle of Wight later in the summer.

Scotty,

take a look here .

http://www.newenglandsharks.com/let'sgo.htm

The system doesn't like the comma in the title so you may have to add the last bit manually mad.gif

Some good advice ..even if some of is a bit barbaric.

There is also a link on that page to a snap float with directions to set it up.

Hope it helps and let me know how you get on.

Cheers

Dave

I think Graeme Pullen has caught the odd shark. He wrote a book Go fishing for Shark, Published by The Oxford Illustrated Press that might be helpful. It was published in 1989 so I guess most the info will be relevant.

If you like your shark fishing get yourself a copy of 'First Run Shark' by Mike Thrussell.

Plenty of quality info in there and deservedly has a place on my bookshelf. smile.gif

This has just reminded me, I was after a copy of Bass Fishing by Mr Thrussell a while back but me and a certain Norrie1956 were outbid by some scoundrel as I seem to remember. Can't be AN's Norrie I'm sure as he hates spiny silver things. wink.gif biggrin.gif

Hi Sharkbyte, LOL mate.....didnt realise it was you bidding too....I eventually got a copy of the book..on a Buy it Now (Bargain too)..its sitting beside my 1000+ angling books.... biggrin.gif over 800 of them sea angling.....

I have a copy of First Run, (Signed), an outstanding book....one of the best on the subject I have read....I must have maybe 30 Shark angling books, dating from the turn of the century, some are in Bristol on holiday just now, along with Jabee.... biggrin.gif

Re Bass, I love them.. thumbs.gif ,dont know who told you I hated them.. biggrin.gif .I've travelled down to the south coast a few times to fish for them.....in fact , I'm in Lymington next month for a weekend fishing for them. sun.gif ..a very exciting fish to catch, and I absolutely love fishing for them with live Mackeral, or Scad........ wink.gif wink.gif

Hi Scott
Are you sure you need a balloon? The only Thresher I've caught off the Island took a live Mackerel fished, free-lined, just 25' down hard against the hull of the boat.

Running baits out in the rubby dubby trail will of course work. But I've always found that the rubby dubby also attracts Mackerel and, when the sharks arrive, the shoal bunches up tight against the hull. A live 'loner' stands out like the proverbial 'thumb'. I've even, presumably, foul hooked Porbeagles on light spin gear with a jig when they are 'figure of eighting' under the shoal in such conditions.

Wish you Luck! They're not the easiest of fish to find. One of our Club members regularly fishes for them from his own boat and managed just six releases last year and seven in 2004.
