Does anybody know the best place for shore fishing from hythe (kent) in the winter for cod/codling? i have been summer fishing in hythe for mackerel and been very successful fishing from the rocks by the little chef and from the rocks further along the princess pirade beach by the hotel but are they a good place for winter fishing for cod? has anybody caught cod from the shore in hythe before? also any suggestions on baits and rigs will be much appreciated.

I now fish mostly at Hythe. Might be a slim chance of Codling late on in the year, a bit too early yet, sea still warm. Cod love cold water. Plenty of good Whiting, many nice and chubby. Nice Dabs also. Anywhere along Princes Parade is OK. Or any beach in Hythe, all easy to fish. Cod don't require fancy rigs or bait. IF... they are there, a single 4/0 plus loaded with as much squid or lug or mackerel as you can get on the hook will suffice. I caught loads of Cod in the sixties. One of the easiest fish in the sea to catch. It's just that when you don't catch them now, it's because they are just not there. So this belief springs up that they are difficult and require huge effort and skill. Not so, they are just overfished and on the verge of extinction.
