That is an interesting bit of strangeness.

""They will now have to take George [the dog] with them in the car until things take their natural course."
So will they place a dog turd on the dash now to start the car? Dash-hound, giggle. |

Not poo Chesters! true - the RF 'id' chip in modern 'keys' gets picked up by a transponder in the steering column to 'mobilise the imobiliser.
Therfore if pooch is placed within a few feet of the steering then the imobilser will turn off & the ignition key will work. Could be a whole new security device there? might be patentable having to take pooch to the motor to start it - Hmm Dogkey? Poochkey, Cankey? , fidomotor?, answers on a postcard please........ -------------------- Jealousy: totally irrational anger directed at people who happen to be richer, prettier, thinner, cleverer and more successful than you are.

QUOTE(chesters1 @ Sep 27 2006, 02:08 PM) still cannot see how a "chip" works without power http://insight.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/emergi...39115777,00.htm QUOTE What RFID is At a high level, RFID is an e-tagging technology that can be used to provide electronic identity to any object. Electronic information about an object is stored in RFID chips embedded or attached to the object. Using an RFID reader, the electronic identity (code in the form of several bits of data) can be read wirelessly using radio waves. This is where it differs from other e-tagging technologies such as barcode scanning, which uses optical recognition. Because it uses radio waves, no line of sight is required and RFID tags embedded inside an object can be sensed. Further, an RFID reader can read multiple RFID tags simultaneously, which is not possible using barcodes. An RFID reader at the gate of a warehouse, for example, can immediately sense all the RFID-tagged objects within a container as soon as the container passes by the gate. RFID tags can either be passive (cheap and work without any battery) or active (costly, yet have an embedded power source). Further, the electronic identification stored in a tag can either be fixed or dynamically updatable. The range of sensing RFID tags from an RFID reader can vary from a few centimetres to a few metres depending on the frequency of operation and the type of tags. RFID tags are very rugged and come in several form factors. The RFIDs can even be embedded in a piece of paper or in a form that can be permanently tagged to a shirt. In large volumes, RFID tags can be very cheap. By 2005, the cost of passive RFID tags is expected to fall below 5 (3.14p) cents per unit. Pretty soon RFID tags will replace all barcodes. You'll fill up your supermarket trolley and simply wheel it to the checkout where you will be presented with an itemised bill without having to unload/reload the trolley so that your purchases can be scanned by a human operator. You won't have to present your membership cards etc at the gym etc, just walk straight through with you tagged card in your wallet. RFID tags hidden in products could be detected by hidden detectors anywhere. The possibilities can be frightening! Pets are even now injected with RFIDs, so that they can be scanned and identified when lost, think about that and the potential, and we are only seeing the first generation of this technology. -------------------- |
