Peter.
Just followed on of the listings to discover that Anglo Dawn is for sale. One of the most famous charter boats in the UK!! Ted Cooke is retiring? That`ll be the day. Also Colin Johnson is selling Shogun. I`ve had the pleasure to fish with him, though I completely ignored his instructions and ended up with the best haul of the day!! The rest of the crew were amused by him constsntly ranting at me. It wasn`t until I`d pulled up 2X 20lb cod and a slightly bigger Ling that the rest realised we knew each other!! Bloody nice boat though. Paul. -------------------- We don`t use J`s anymore!!

I am at present looking for a trailer for a boat I hope to complete the purchase of by Wednesday evening. Only just found out that a trailer is not available in the deal!! The boat is 5.2M by 1.8M. Any good leads will earn "Brownie Points" galore!!

Hi
Slightly off topic but the author may be interested too... I am in the process of buying a second hand GRP somewhere around 14-19 foot to use in Clew Bay and around the northern Mayo and Sligo coasts. We may use it on the bigger lakes too depending... What would people recommend based on their own experience? I had an OSM (orkney style) 14 foot with a cuddy a few years ago on the east coast and found that a delight if a bit dodgy in squally conditions. The same goes for engines, eg. I have heard that the early four strokes are not good regardless of make and that some of them have big problems after as little as 50 hours. Any help much appreciated. -------------------- |

My previous boat was a Shetland Alaska - great boat, loads of room inside. I started off with a single 50HP Evinrude which I replaced after the gearbox blew up 3 times , with two Mariner 30HPs. It was fast, stable and roomy, and not too expensive. If you want a planing hull in the 16ft range I reckon its still among the best.
Good luck with your search! -------------------- East Hampshire Boat Anglers www.boat-angling.co.uk

Like the previous responder I also had a Alaska 500 that I loved. The boat never felt as if it would let me down even when caught out by changing seas off Whitby . The boat was on a Snipe brake back trailer and I would often launch it by my self with ease. It was fitted out with a Mercury Classic 50 engine. It gave out 45 hp and as it was a four cylinder engine was lovely and smooth for a two stroke. The engine was a little under powered at times when fully loaded with tree anglers. Empty would do 25 knots loaded down to about 17 knots. If I was to pick I would now go for a 75 HP 4 stroke Honder.

I would go for a 4 stroke every time, I have a Honda 115 on my Warrior 175 and would NEVER go back to a two stroke. Just fill them up stright from the pump,no vibration, whisper quiet, and uses half the juice my Yamaha 80 2 stroke did and of course with the Honda five years warrenty.
