Page 5 of Fishing News.

Headline: Anglers Reel in The Cod

QUOTE
THE FOLLOWING is an edited version of comments spotted recently on an angling website.

'Have just returned from another 70 hour trip. We were working about 155 miles east of Whitby........etc'

As the reader said who kindly sent us the comments 'Makes you wonder why bother (sic) being a registered commercial fisherman.......'

(Also included on the same page "ICES cannot advise a zero quota for cod and meanwhile leave the amatuer fishery untouched"

hmmm!

Boasting about the number of fillets landed by Cheiftan on an open Internet Forum might not have been best advised if you want to avoid bag limits on anglers catches of cod!

ps Love the cartoon that goes with the article. Is that Chieftan? and which one is Challenge? (does he smoke a pipe?)

ooopps. Here comes the Cod bag limits

Looks like a cheap attempt at advertising has turned into an serious own goal.
Is anyone suprised? You can't kill that many fish these days and expect no one to take notice.

Don't try and blame Challenge or the Chieftan for when ( I did say when and not if) bag limits come in and a sea licence is introduced for it does no one on here any favours or distinquishes them in credit to blame them when the blame lies elsewhere and with others connected both to DEFRA, Inland Revenue and various government officials and it must be said some angling representatives who either offered it up in the first place or did'nt argue against such a proposal in the hope of achieving other measures that could have been seen as beneficial to some sectors of the RSA

Until now Bag Limits have only been cosidered in one fishery - bass.

Now the spotlight has been turned onto cod.

As far as those who haven't complained about the possible introduction of bag limits being blamed for their introduction, every angler who doesn't make it along to their local SFC meeting to protest will have to shoulder some of that blame.

See: http://www.sacn.org.uk/Conservation-and-Po...or_Anglers.html

Angling Reps on SFCs are vastly outnumbered, and unless well supported by their local angling communities, don't stand a chance when arguing against the imposition of bag limits, or the many other issues which are going to affect angling in the not too distant future.

The problem being though Leon is that bag limits for cod have been hinted at or discussed by officials for many years now as part of a licencing scheme and its not for the benefit of the cod recovery programme.

Licence schemes only lead to two things; more regulation aimed at those whose participation in the sport does'nt warrant such overkill and income generation for the treasury, plain and simple
