We now have lots of mackeral off shore in the Thames Estuary. We always got a few but in the last few years there have really been a lot.
This has led to some good catches of tope, thornies, and large bass on fresh mackeral. Why should we be getting these mackeral?where have they come from? and are there still mackeral where these have come from?
Has global warming caused this influx? if so what other fish could be there? after all to catch fish you have to target them, so who would be brave enough to maybe use live mackeral fished at different depths from say balloons.

I have a thoeory,
we used to catch 90% of our tope on eel section.
We used to say the first set of neep tides in June were the best.
We fished these tides with three lost runs, the fish just dont seem to be on the bottem, my mate matts 45 came before these small tides.
this makes me think that on small tides the tope are up in the water feeding on the new mackeral shoals, and when the tides get larger and the mackeral are closer to the bottem may be we could get more runs.
So maybe on the next set of small tides i will perswade my mate to go against essex tope tradition(mainly invented by my farther in the late 70s) and try an more American cross cornish style with chum and ballons.Who knows it may be worth trolling now for fish like albacore, if not now sooner or later im sure.

From what I can gather, down south, there are pleanty of mackerel about but the conditions are keeping them out of the reach of the shore angler. Maybe this weeks weather will change that.
