For those of you that are new to beach multipliers, or are thinking of getting one I learned a valuable lesson yesterday. I've been fishing with an ABU 7000 for about a year now and have never nested it, for xmas I got an Abu C3 CT Mag Elite which i've been after for ages. Yesterday I had a meeting in Portland dorset which means driving right past Chesil Beach so I popped home got my rod, new reel and a 5oz lead thinking i'll try it out for the first time. And i'm glad I did, being a cocky git I had the spool brake set wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy to loose which resuled in the mother of all birdnests, which no matter how much I tried was not going to be untangled.

Moral of the story, try your new reel before you take it fishing properly, other wise you could waste a whole session knobbing around with a birdnests.

Scotty

with MAG reels i always set the magnets as tight as they go, Even then the reels are fairly lively, With my 525 even in the strongest headwinds and magnets set to slow i have never nested it, Only pushed the mags up a few times on the calmest of days...

Scotty
I have the ABU C3 CT Mag Elite, when I purchased it the air brake blocks were in a little bag, like a plonker I thought they were spares. Anyway I found it to be a very lively reel, have now fitted blocks much easier to cast and no problems.

But what is the chrome dial with numbers on it for, I went back to where I purchased it and they sort of fluffed me of with a load of chatter that told me nothing. I surfed around without success even ABU do not mention it and there is no reference to in the manual. I sin it round and it does not appear to do any thing.

Do you know?

It controles the magnets, The higher the number the less chance of getting a birdie I think.

Anyone know what the numbers on the side of a non mag Abu reel are for? Never paid them much attention as the dial just seems to spin round.

That knob controls the end float of the spool - adjust it so there is a slight sideways movement - then move the chrome ring with the numbers to line up with the silver arrow on the knob - this is now set up.

If conditions change you can then turn the knob to increase from the 'zeroed' starting point.

So the magnets are self adjusted

Use the end float to set the coarse adjustment on the reel as advised, then zero the little silver ring, a little bit of end float can be taken off or added to adjust for conditions.
The mags do not come off linearly when you turn the little black adjuster, they come off fairly linearly until about 4 then there is a rapid decline.
There are lots of ways to adjust one of these little beauties; oil in the bearings, blocks, mags, tweaking the end float, line weight and load.

When you have zeroed your spool float leave it alone, the magnets will do the rest. if still too fast put thicker oil in the bearings or larger brakeblocks. when you get it right it will give you no trouble til it needs a service smile.gif

Darn - others snuck in while I wasn't looking smile.gif
==============================

Nope.... the magnets are adjusted by the black slider at the top of lhs plate - confusing eh

The knob puts tension on the spool - if the spool was running totally free then the magnets alone wouldn't be able to control the spool speed.

So that's.....

End Float
Magnets
Oil Viscosity
Line Level

.... all to consider and tweak smile.gif

Though I don't think I've ever had to adjust the end float on my ABU Mag once it was set up.

BTW the knob on the right is used in conjunction with the left knob to centralise the spool in the frame rolleyes.gif
