I've spent the last two years using a selections of lures, spinner baits and spinners to catch Pike on my local river. Just recently I decided (due to a forum post I'd read) to try out a boring old spinner... a Rublex Ondex size five gold decorated. The results were stunning. I had take after take. I've not seen anything like it. I've since used a variety of these Ondex's (silver, size 6, undecorated etc) and they all seem extremely effective.

Just what is it about these things? I've Googled for them and it appears that many older and more experienced anglers reckon they are the bees knees... but they're just a spinners. Why are they so special?

An while I'm at it... why are they so bloody hard to get hold of (or perhaps that's obvious)?

Hard to get hold of!! Harris Angling or Lathams of Potter Heigham seem to have oodles of 'em, at cut prices. Yes, they are good!

No idea why they are so special, but chances are that the thread you found on here about them was one of mine. I haven't done any lure fishing for a while, but used to swear by them. They are just, quite simply, the best lure I ever used.

Neilther appear to have any (well Harris have a size 1, which isn't much use to me!).
I've now found an online shop very near to me that sells them though; Sovereign Super baits of Frampton (East Sussex): www.sovereignsuperbaits.co.uk. Other than that it appears to be a Dutch online shop (www.rnrtackle.nl) or braving eBay (and possible copies.. I thought Eurostar operated the channel tunnel?).
I've ordered enough to keep me going for as few years.

Well, there's a surprise. Both have been flogging them for a quid and Latham's shop had loads on the wall only last Wednesday.

Ondex spinners are certainly very effective when the fish are high in the water. I like the striped patterns that look very perchy, and have caught both both bigger perch and jack pike on them.

Having said that, I don't use them much on my local waters as usually other spinners are more effective as the fish are often too deep and out of casting range of an Ondex.

And I see they've still got that woollen tassel for trapping water and rusting your trebles!

I don't need to buy them, they grow on trees around here! Usually attached direct to 4 or 5 lb mono with a granny knot.

Well I personally dont think they are that special! Years ago when UK lure anglers had so little choice of lure then they were possibly the better out of a bad bunch and to a certain degree still a good adition to the box (especially for perch) but certainly no where near as good as many lures now available.
