I have just bought one of these reels from ebay and i think there is a problem with it, i say think because i have never owned a baitcaster before and i dont know if it is supposed to do what it's doing?

Bear with me coz ive tried to explain it to the seller and even when i read my explination im confused

The problem is that there is about three millimeteres play in the reel handle, in a in-out motion, when i pull the handle out i am able to rotate it both ways as if there is a backwind.

I have taken the little cap off the handle and there is a nut underneath with a silver shaft running through the middle, the handle and the nut move a couple of mil on the shaft.

The only reason i noticed is because i set the reel up on the rod and tied it to a bench to test the bend, i applied left side pressure and the reel handle gave out on me and spun very quickly, when the reel is tipped to the left the handle drops the couple of mil and the "backwind" happens.

Confusing aint it  biggrin.gif

I have spoken to the seller and he says that it was fine when it was sent and i have no reason to not believe him as i dont know if its even broken. (he's a regular poster by the way) be nice coz hes seems a nice bloke.

It is broken.

May be something very simple but it is broken.

I would get it serviced. Although I never have. And my oldest Abu is 34 years old (I got it when I was 14). Don't complain... you've got a reel for a lifetime there once it's sorted. They take incredible abuse (as long as they are Ambassadeurs or fixed spools made in Sweden).

Incidentally, from your unfortunate experience, I gather it is therefore possible to convert an Abu multiplier to backwind? Is that correct? If so, how?

fenboy - dead easy. Open the reel, break a couple of parts, and after you put it back together, it will backwind. biggrin.gif

Sounds like it's broken to me, but have you tightened the star drag up? If it's very loose you might get the problem you're describing.

Could be a combination of a loose star drag, the tension nut (for casting) is too loose and the anti-reverse bearing may be 'glued' up with grease and it allowing the handle/spool to backwind.

Backwind is easy enough, just remove the ball bearing that holds the anti-reverse. It was like a roller bearing that goes round the shaft of the spool. Not very clear but easy enough. I did it once having read a book by Paul Gustafson on catching bigger pike. Didn't find the claimed advantage to be an advantage, so popped the bearing back in place, never to take it off again! Clutch control is such a doddle I found backwinding a waste of time. Gord Burton claims to have worn Ambassadeurs out biggrin.gif !
