Yes, look out for second hand examples. I've got an Arnold Kingpin ( £70 ) and an Adcock Stanton ( £50 ) from Ebay.
If you can, follow the aution right to the close - look out for ones that end during the day - sometimes you can get a real bargain ( not too many people watching at 11.00am!! etc. ) Auctions that end between 8pm and 10pm seem to attract a premium.
Anything other than a centrepin is a poor second for long trotting IMO.

i`m not sure it would free spool easily enough ,spin a good pin and it spins for minutes ,spin a multiplyer??

My mag elite will spin for about 30 seconds with a hard flick. I've had to tune it though of course.

Mister Mathew, why, as your signature suggests, are carp anglers afraid? Just interested .

i think there will be a friction problem ,multiplyers rotate on 2 axels and maybe more friction with a level wind and freespool could involve cogs turning = even more friction ,pins rotate on 1 ,closed faces have increased friction depending on distance .

I have had two closed face reels, intended for my son so he doesn't tangle but neither he or I could really get on with them, certainly in both cases there was plenty of friction during casting (tho that might be what comes from buying secondhand off ebay)
theres almost none  the only friction is along the spool lip ,filled with the correct line to the correct depth and its fine for long trotting.

a multiplyer has a spindle at each end of the spool i.e. 2 axels

mr mathew your best bet is to try ,get a 2bb float and chuck it in the river and watch
