Am I the only one who doesn't quite believe what I read in the likes of Total Sea Angler Fishing when it comes to readers catches, and in particular the youngsters?

I don't know whether illusions occur but often when I see a '6lb bass' I think it is nearer 3 and likewise with many other catches. Next time you buy one of these mags, take a look and see what I mean.

 Not wishing to defend any particular mag but it is very difficult to judge. We at the SAN run several comps sponsored by tackle companies and our rules state that each fish must be accompanied by a clear photo, be weighed on accurate scales and witnessed. What can we or any mag do if the witness signs to say that the fish was of that weight? If two people are prepared to lie then that's it. We have had suspect fish entered but fortunately there has been a better one so no problem but one day we will have to award a prize to a 'suspect' fish.

That's another one Sam, lots of fish 'entered' in winter with the angler wearing flip-flops and a t-shirt!

Talking about lying John Ashford told me about a big open competition that was won by a 15lb cod with net marks on it - Shakespeare withdrew their sponsorship the next year.

A couple of years ago, I bitched on this site about one of Henry Gilbeys` sea angling programmes. Broadcast on cable TV. Well, Henry e.mailed me (nothing nasty). We`ve swapped e.mails ever since.
Much to my suprise? 3 months later, one of our `glossy` sea fishing mags published an article based on the same fishing trip!! Like it was a scoop.  The `scoop` was nearly a year out of date!!
I`m sure we all know about the pic of the `Catch and release` prize winning wrasse. ( The photo was taken in the captors back garden!!)
But, that`s what you get, when your sister mags include everything from `knitting monthly` to `hot car` mags.

Hi Folks
Have not been on here for a while - great to see it's still as popular as ever. Personally I blame all the burgers filled with steroids; some of these kids are actually six feet tall! smile.gif

When I spotted the thread "Dodgey Magazine Photos" I thought to start I was in the non-fish chat program. biggrin.gif

Imagine my surprise when I saw it was dodgey fish pics. biggrin.gif

This has been going on for years, it was the reason I gave up entering shore comps.

Did the dodgey 15lb cod get the prize?

I still dream of the double figure bass but only so I can go to bed with a smile on my face. biggrin.gif
