Not really the place like you say but a worthy warning...we all use the phone to call are fishy mates anyway!!!...and send them pics now on our mobiles to brag!!! biggrin.gif

I got shafted to the tune of 400 quid in one quarter by a pair of rogue dialers on this very PC!!!!! ....I had a message that came up (the official microsoft one that you get when you go to connect, with your connection, user name and password)...the small amount of writing under your password changes to 'connection lost, would you like to reconnect'...remember this is still showing My dialup connection, My user name and My password...click OK and that's 17 quid every time!!!

BT and ICSTIS (the complaints people) are a waste of time... ICSTIS are a toothless organisation with no powers over these scam mongers...and no interest in your complaint if similar complaints have not been recieved.

I could not ban the 09*** numbers from my dialup as I used ISDN (BT cannot ban 09** numbers on a ISDN line) However I'm now on Broadband and the problem has not been seen since.

Be warned guys and girls. If you've got an ordinary dialup connection through your BT line put a bar on premium rate calls (I believe this is a free service) However this will not stop some international scams so still be aware of anything suspitious...and if you 'loose a connection'...DO NOT RECONNECT...just close down your browser and start it up again as usual.

...unless you can afford an extra 400 quid on the bill, for a service not received....in which case you probaly own a trawler or two!!!!...but that's another story...in the right place! smile.gif biggrin.gif

There are a number of real scams that charge you lots of money for calls that you don't find out about until you get your bill but not usually quite this high.

I did put in a link to one on the post in the non-fishing section but it is 809, a US-style area code (but not actually in the US) that is well known for hosting this sort of thing.

The ones that really nail some folks are the spyware 'rogue dialers' that get loaded on a PC without the owner knowing it and if there is an attached modem in the PC (for internet or for fax) will silently dial toll numbers and run up charges that way. We are working with a user on a 'windows help' forum who picked up one that dialed a couple of high cost (well, several dollars a minute) porn sites. The dialer would connect and the spyware would surf but the user never saw anything.
