I have just finished reading a very interesting artical by Mel Russ in this months Sea Angler magazeen.
The articals subject was boat fishing in Sardinia. I felt the piece to be well writtern with some lovely pics of good fish, the only thing wrong with the artical was Mels constanst biased towards fishing abroad. He even makes the coment that UK fish are slugish. If as much efort had been made on a artical by Mell on say UK Tope or Bass fishing, think of the good for our sport this could do. In a age where we are trying to get our estuaries no commercial arears, trying to promote recreational sports angling to make our sport stronger and look after our fucture fisheries. I feel Sea Angler needs a new editor that really cares about sea angling right hear at home in the UK. Maybe Mell could emergrate and edit some big game mag far away. -------------------- BASS MEMBER

The trouble is Sam, fishing in this country simply isn't as good as it is in some other countries. I understand what you say aboiut promoting fishing in this country, but why promote something that is on it's arse? The politicians would love that! "Look at all these mugs paying a fortune to fish over here and we haven't had to do anything to improve or promote it".
By promoting fishing abroad and encouraging people to spend their hard earned money overseas, it might actually make someone, (ie, politicians), realise that we are missing out. I'd love to know the figures for what people spend on fishing abroad each year. You are right though Sam, we have the potential here for some great fishing but all the time it is being managed by morons, ie, sea fisheries committees, it's worth f*** all. |

Just imagine if we had recreational fishing areas over here with no gill netting. The no take zones in New Zealand have become very successful with more and bigger fish inside, and outside the zone. The fishing has improved no end, and in a relatively short time too.
We can but dream! One day we might actually have people managing the inshore fisheries who can see further than their own wallet. |

Some people are only in politics and meadia for the power rush, they find it makes them feel better about thier sad little lives. To have the power to make a real differance, to have the means to show people the truth in a meadia where the people realy belive what you say.The above are often wasted on small minded egotistical charicters more interested in thier image and there bank balance than the fucture of our sport and our enviaroment.(please excuse my spelling)

We have some great sportfish. Bass, Pollock, Coalfish and sea-run trout spring to mind but stocks are so pressured that they simply arn't there in the sort of number needed to facilitate a viable sportfishing industry.
To change this, we need drastic changes to fishing practices and the creation of no take and rod & Line only areas. Trouble is, that isn't going to happen. As far as fishing abroad is concerned, sorry, but for the most part, the fish available are bigger, faster, more aggressive and more fun to catch. That's not bias, it's just a simple fact resulting from warmer water. -------------------- Species caught in 2008:
Barramundi. p-i-k-e-y sea bream. Indian sea catfish. Guitarfish. Mangrove Jack. Mahseer. Squid (Not strictly a fish but it took a lure !). Emporer Sweetlip. Black Spot Snapper. Moray eel. Spangled Emperor. Bluecheek silver grunt. Yellow striped emperor. Vanikoro sweeper. Pike. Perch. Brown trout. Chub. |

I am sorry but I am going to do a Benny on this one.
If we want to promote sea angling in this country the last place to succeed is in angling mags. The only people who read them are anglers, a bit like the Welsh Tourist Board shop in Carmarthen, all the signs were in welsh so the tourist didn't know what it was!!! If you want to promote angling you need a vehical to reach the masses like football in every daily paper. Trouble is if it was succesful there would be even less fish to go round. -------------------- I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. NFSA PM
