i'd like to transport a koi about 50 miles in a car! how does one do it so that a) the water doesn't slosh everywhere as it would in a tank the oxygen levels remain high c) the fish is as relaxed as possible. Are there arny links anybody knows of? are there any ways people have tried without specialist equipment that costs the earth? are there any tips/advice anybody knows of?

I transported 17 large Koi 300 miles recently, which took over 7 hours !!

Get some heavy duty fish transport bags (EBay/Local fish dealer) and put in enough water to just cover the fish that you wish to carry. Inflate the rest of the bag (Pure Oxygen is best .. but I just used a camp bed inflator !!) so the bag fills like a balloon. Seal off the top of the bag by twisting and bending over the neck, then fastening with a rubber band. Prop the bag upright in your car ... and drive as fast as possible !!

Open the bags as soon as you arrive at your destination, and follow the usual procedure for re-housing.

all i do is get a 5 gallon buket and 3/4 fill withe water then cover with cling film then get a car tyre pump (electrical) fit a 4ft lenth of hose on the end then pop it in the buket and hey presto but mr wiggleys idear sounds best

I have transported a lot of large koi over the years long distances too.
The best way is as mr wiggly says - get transport bags from local koi pond fish dealer use two bags one inside the other fill with oxygen and rubber band over twisted neck, Then place the bag in a cardboard box (suitable size) this helps stabilise the bag whilst allowing for a little flixability around the sides.

If you talk to your local pond fish dealer i'm sure he will help you with the bags and oxygen for a small price and your fish will be fine. 50 miles is not a long way and remember when fish are transported from Japan (koi) they are often in the crates for 36 hours + with no more care than they would get using the above method.

I use a length of string a fish coller ( check ebay) and the National Canal network takes time but the fish are happy
