I'm a self-declared tackle tart. I have been known to buy rods, reels, bits just because they looked interesting and I was sure I could find a quary or situation where I could use them if I had them. And quite a few of the purchases are via mail-order from catalogs. As a result, I get a number of tackle catalogs mailed to me and read each one carefully - trying to spot the things I "just have to try".
I was looking thru a sea-angling one today and reading an advert for a Shimano reel. It struck me that there were a number of terms that were purely invented and basically void of real meaning. But trademarked. Maybe Shimano is trying to put some of them into the general vocabulary like they did with Bait Runner® several years ago or like Dupont did with teflon. But at this point it just makes for a very strange write-up. (and the bold face, italics are mine to indicate a junk phrase) ************************************* Shimano Calcutta® TE™ (and TE™ means Total Efficiency according to them) This reel combines High Efficiency Gears™ with a Super Free™ pinion gear system for superior operation. ..... Easy access side plate and Variable Brake System™ casting control, Dartainium® drag. *************************************** What is Dartainium® exactly and why is it such a great thing for the drag? And not to pick on Shimano because I found the following from Daiwa - although some of theirs are more descriptive. Air Rotation™, Air Bail™, micro-pitch Tournament Drag, Twist Buster 2™ line twist reduction, Gyro™ ( they trademarked a slang term for Gyroscope?). [ 16. It's also a slang term for a Gyro Copter. Now that WOULD be useful for spoting fish and carrying out the groundbait!

Its not limited to reels. I have a super little Zebco Gatorback baitcasting rod. $6.00 U.S.! Linked with an ABU Ambassadeur Lite Plus Winch (multiplier) I can flick a Shakespeare Small S and similar 30 yards and more, it's a great little rod! Interestingly it is made of 'Flexible Durafiber'! Well, the Americans never could spell right

You know, it won't be long before every fishing reel you buy is judged by the speed and amount of computer chips built in. Each reel will have a built in digital radio (for listening to weather reports), mobile phone (for communicating your catches to you mates), digital camera (obviously), internet (AnglersNet from the bankside!!!). Can you imagine the fun tackle makers would have coming up with names then!
What? You actually want to fish with it aswell???? -------------------- |

Morning all,
Dartainium® - probably a Titanium alloy, titanium is used for performance cycle components (brakes etc) and cycle bits are Shimano’s other big business so technology crossover will be common. The one I love is the Total EfficiencyTM, being one of these mad engineering types total efficiency to me means a 100% efficient system, so it looks like Shimano have developed a perpetual motion reel. The advert is all Standard marketing gobbledegook. TTFN Duncan -------------------- Angling Ways are Pleasant Ways

Spotted in a Tackle Dealer's 2002 Catalogue, in an advert for a (celebrity-endorsed) very expensive range of rods:
"The curve of these rods increases in direct proportion to the amount of strain placed upon them." Huh? |
