Just about any, had good sessions in most extremes, i feel it's more location than weather when it comes to the old chub...

Chub will continue feeding when the weather gets really cold and most other fish have hunkered down into the deeps.
Without other species there to quickly mop up the free offerings, and beat the chub to the hook bait, you have a much greater chance of attracting and hitting the targeted species when the cold weather sets in. Tight Lines - leon -------------------- |

QUOTE Leon Roskilly: ....and they will still feed in really hot weather too - just find a deepish pool with some overhanging bushes and drop a slug under them.Chub will continue feeding when the weather gets really cold . As Spod says, they feed in almost all conditions. -------------------- Vagabond.

I agree that chub will feed in almost any conditions, including baking hot and freezing cold. This makes them one of the most obliging of species.
However, the tactics needed vary with the weather. For instance see my article "Fishing Frozen Rivers" at http://anglers-net.co.uk/authors/steve05.htm -------------------- Classic Fishing Books www.classicfishingbooks.co.uk 100s of fishing books for sale/wanted + reviews

If in doupt, throw in a few bread crusts ( 50p size )and let them drift down. They should show themselves. Keep feeding, not to much, but once they are competing put your hook ( freelined ) in the next one. . . bingo.

Most chub in my local stillwater get caught in the colder months.
I belive this is because during the warmer months most angler fish close in to the margins for the bream, carp or tench and the chub are easily spooked. During the colder months more anglers tend to use a feeder cast a fair distance to the far bank that has no pegs on it and has trees in the water. During very cold snaps the chub are the only species that will feed right through the day. The other species tend to have a feeding spell in the late afternoon when the water has warmed by a fraction and the light starts to drop. Just about any bait will work for chub. Traditionally maggots and casters were used in the winter. It has now been proved that bigger baits work better as the chub know they get more nutrition/energy from bigger baits than by darting in and out to intercept maggots/casters. It has also been proved that when using a maggot feeder that chub and barbel will swim up to the feeder and suck the maggots out. Why wait for the current to sweap the maggots away? When fishing to snags a big smelly bait works well as the current sends the scent into the snag and hopefully draws the chub out of it. A good bait for this is a bit of steak with some minced beef as loose feed. The blood and juices are an instant attractor. Some people complain about the price of this bait. Dont know why as a bit of steak costing 4.00 will last all day. A few pints of maggots cost about the same. -------------------- RUDD

Paul and I are just back from a rather special chubbing session on the Kennet. Fishing trotted maggot and keeping the bait going in I managed 4 chub which went - in order of capture, 4lb6oz, 4lb11oz, 6lb 5oz, 6lb 0oz. The 6.05 was a new PB. Incredibily Paul also had a pb chub - his fish went 5lb 13oz. Needless to say we're both ruddy ecstatic!
