Hi Elton,
No big surprise there, intensive farming methods of agriculture animals have proved this time and again, chickens being one good example. I favour the raising and releasing of young as the best method of increasing fish stock. It should be financed by goverment and EC funds, at least then we could see a benefit for our taxes. -------------------- I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. NFSA PM

I may be wrong - but I think the goverment are spending a couple of million carrying out a study on the effect of Salmon Farming on Salmon Rivers - however the rivers they are testing are mainly on the East coast of Scotland ... when just about all Salmon Farms are on the West and North coast, so the results can hardly be conclusive. For more vaild results I would of thought they do the majority of their testing in West/North coast rivers.

Typical,
I often wonder why when comes to fish that goverments in general do so much spouting followed by so little effort. When it comes to other food stuff be it animal or vegitable the slightest thing wrong and they are up in arms. -------------------- I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. NFSA PM

QUOTE Ken Davison South Wales: Such is the amount of fry and juveniles that can be naturally generated from the spawning biomass, that any fish farmed and released into the wild would be like a pinprick in the ocean.I favour the raising and releasing of young as the best method of increasing fish stock. It's not the generation of young fish at the bottom that is the problem. It's the many thousands of tonnes of adult fish at the top, that nature really cannot spare, that is the source of most of our problems with declining fish stocks. Hi Leon,
I agree 100% I was politey saying I dislike any form of intensive rearing and if they have to go that route take the option of rearing and releasing as with salmon par. I put fish farming as posted in the same category as battery hens, pigs that never roam a field and veal. Intensive farming always tends to lead to disaster BSE, salmonella just to mention a couple of screw ups. -------------------- I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. NFSA PM

Hi MJB
The so called high protein food containing chicken muck amongst other things that caused the problem was fed to dairy herds to increase milk yield cheaply. 90% of milk cows are sired to produce calves for the meat market and the resulting problem was passed on this way into the meat market. If you look back you will also see that when it originally appeared it was stated their was know way this decease could be passed from cow to calf. Remember dear old John Gummer and the beef burger saga. Yes it was down one hundred percent to man trying to screw nature for more gain. I remember it well because I rented a farm at the time and my wife was raising these calves for the meat market. It also ment the pedigree herd of rogmonolas ( I think I spelt it near enough ) she was grooming organically had to take the same root as all of the other 3 year old plus animals, the knackers yard, just two of the six which I financed for her lost me £3000. These things not only burn a hole in your pocket they also burn a vivid memory. So not wishing any offence I will stick with my original statement. -------------------- I fish, I catches a few, I lose a few, BUT I enjoys. NFSA PM

Well I'm with you Ken if you feed meat, in this case another cow to a vegetarian cow what do you expect? It was a known problem in sheep.
Are they feeding salmon to Salmon, if so will we get mad salmon disease?!! ........ sorry dan -------------------- There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot!
