Hi all

Getting very frustrated with my not knot tying abilities. I want to connect 12 main line to 50 lb shock leader and my usual knot (double lopped bloody knot) is not working as invariably as I apply pressure to close the knot the lighter line slides neatly into place, but the main line does not knot properly, and has even slid completely out of its knot; so the question is how do I connect a heavy (50 lb) shock leader to a light
mon main line (12 lb). Autumn surf fishing...

Thanks

The knot I use is the Allbright.

This is how you tie it;

http://www.marinews.com and go to "fishing knots".

That's a great site!!

I've always got away with the blood knot but I'll try something else now.

If the blood knot goes right, you have the smaller end of the knot (dissimilar lines)going out through the rings first acting as a crued lead in!

on that page, i use the "Wind on Wire Leader" for tying 15lb line to shockleader...i find the advantage is that shockleader part doesnt form a large knot and makes less resistance through the eyes smile.gif

Westerly,

I'd go for the hitch and tucked blood knot, like the "wind on wire leader knot" described above, just tuck the blood knot for added security. Pick up an old copy of Sea Angler and you're bound to find it. Its a strong and easy to tie knot.

Cranfield, is the Albright stronger than the leader knot I mentioned above? And there's me using it just for attaching fly line to backing.

Neil.

Or just switch to PowerPro line where the diameter of the 50lb b/s is the same as a 12lb mono and the line is slightly less stiff.

No need for a shock leader then which does away with that annoying knot.
