Here.

We are trying to talk the producers of a Canadian outdoors angling show to do a segment on Lota lota (variously known over here as
American burbot, Burbot, Eelpout, Ellpout, Freshwater cod, Freshwater eel, Lawyer fish, Ling, Lotte, Lush, Miakatu, Miakoto, Miyakatuy, Nettārnak, Shulukpaoluk, Tiktaalik, Tiktaaliq, and a few others) for his show and are dreging up lots of bits about them.

Burbot are as rare as unified anglers in England, Newt. We used to catch 'em as kids but that is a long time ago. Apparently Norway is the place to go. Vidar, stop lurking & come and tell us about them ,PLEASE!

Burbot Article Here

I was just talking with a guy this past Saturday who caught an 11 lb Master Angler burbot while jigging through the ice on Crystal Lake in northern Michigan. He said it was very slimy and wrapped its tail around his wrist like a snake when he removed the hook. He also said it tasted like lobster. I've never seen one, myself.

severus - don't know if you ever watch Urban Outdoors (on OLN) but we are trying to talk them into doing a Burbot show.

Nope, never seen Urban Outdoors. What got you interested in Burbot, Newt?

Also - aren't Bowfin aka Dogfish? Or is that another species?

Burbot - just seems like a very interesting species and I'd love to see a how-to on catching them. No good reason.

Bowfin/dogfish/grinnel - that is a fish that is common down here and superficially resembles Burbot, sort of. I have read they have a few up your way too but a fish that likes shallow, warm, cluttered places and can breath air if needed has a niche down here for sure.

Burbot with their liking for clear, deep, cold water and their habit of spawning while the water is still iced over wouldn't like it down here.
