Went fishing at a pond called Abrook in Devon in the weekend and despite blanking I did make an unusual catch - a rod and reel! I put one rod out and decided to get my spinning rod out to keep myself busy. On the third cast the rod locked up on something. As I started applying pressure I could feel some slow but steady movement and I thought I was caught up on a branch and as I continued pulling something broke the surface which did look like the end of a branch until it got nearer and I saw it was the end of an abbreviated duplon handle. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I recovered a Daiwa Pro-Z carp rod along with an Abu reel that had obviously been left unattended and pulled in by a carp. Anybody else caught anything unusual!

That people can loose a rod in that way is pitiful

I once hooked an eel fyke net that, by its position, was probably set for pike. Pulled it up, no licence disc, no otter guards and full of coarse fish. I then tried another likely spot, another illegal net. Found five all together. Good job that I did, the damage they could have caused could have been immense.

I didn't pull it in with a rod but I found a stone arrow head in the margins when fishing for walleye. It belonged to the Cree Natives of the area.

Snagging up on the canal, recently, I hauled in a tree-branch with a 'bird's nest' of line wrapped around it and, on the hook, a baseball cap. That must have been somebody's worst-ever cast!

Paul - yup. Those things can get nasty. Big one can remove a body part if you aren't careful after you land it.

In fact, the piece Elton posted about folks landing catfish by grabbing them makes you wonder. Turtles live in lots of the same places and a go-around with a big one while grabbing fish could cause you to be nick named "old one hand".
