What sort of presentation Merge Peacocks are for, and while I'm asking Peacock stepped? They look quite similar.

I use them for on the drop at a medium range distance or for a more sensitive detection (less surface film around tip) for just touching bottom.

When stepped wagglers first appeared, they were used a lot by matchmen trotting a far side line. The theory was that, in a usual river flow, the upper levels moved faster than the lower levels, so a stepped waggler offered less resistance in the very upper level where the flow is fastest, and the float would present more naturally. In this style, they worked really well.
